The Nukes blitz the Little Theatre

When a group of musicians can get a room full of people smiling and tapping their feet with just their voices, a ukelele and an empty beer bottle, they are a special group indeed.

And so it proved when Auckland-based ukelele group The Nukes made their first foray outside of the big smoke to the Little Theatre last night for a workshop and concert.

The lineup of Ben Collier, David Theile and Dave Parker gave a packed house two hours of entirely original songs about everything from peas and carrots to the Manukau Harbour, and just about everything inbetween. With their skilfully arranged harmonies, and ukeleles of all types, along with a natural sense of humour, they engaged the audience from the very start, and despite a technical mishap along the way, kept everyone smiling until the very end of their two encores.

To top all that off, earlier in the afternoon, they hosted a workshop where anybody who wanted to have a go at playing a musical instrument could come along, be given a ukelele, and by the end of an hour, be playing along to a song written by the band. All in all, a muscial and humourous day, enjoyed by all, and we look forward to their return.

Many thanks to Dean Taylor of the Te Awamutu Courier for his help in bringing the band to Te Awamutu, and supplying the photo of the concert, and Ian and Sue Dobbs for the halftime food.
